"Yes and..." Framework for brainstorming:

For this brainstorming session, we'll be using the popular improv acting technique of "Yes and". In improv acting, whatever idea an actor comes up with, no matter how crazy and ridiculous that idea is, the other actors "Yes, and" it. That means they build on that idea and they just keep on going.

When you brainstorm with your group, do the same thing – build on their ideas, morph them,  add them to yours, steal them – you are going to arrive at much more interesting concepts and you're going to leverage the wisdom and creativity in the room.

Ready to brainstorm? Sit in a group and have each person take out your envisioned solutions. Set a timer for 15 minutes to share your envision solutions with your group using "Yes, and...". Write down the best ideas then move on to the next person.

Key questions for discussion:

  • how did your ideation prompts change as you worked through the three tips to create good prompts?

  • what one brainstormed idea excited you the most?

  • what one challenge became evident today?

  • what one revelation or breakthrough did you have today?
